Power source: the first decision
How your lights get power determines where you can put them. Battery-powered strands go anywhere — jars, shelves, headboards with no outlet nearby — but you will swap batteries every few weeks. USB-powered lights run from a wall adapter, a power bank, or the back of a clock, which makes them great for desks and bedsides. Wire type: copper vs. covered
Fine copper wire disappears when lit, so the bulbs look like they are floating — clean and modern. Covered strands with shaped bulbs (animals, flowers, acorns) have more personality and read as decor even when off. There is no wrong answer; it is about whether you want the lights to blend in or stand out.
Color temperature
Warm white is the safe default for bedrooms and living spaces — it flatters skin and walls and feels relaxing. Cool white reads brighter and more clinical, which is rarely what you want for cozy decor. When in doubt, warm white.
Indoor vs. outdoor
Not every strand is rated for weather. If lights will be on a porch, fence, or garden, choose outdoor-rated ones (solar strands qualify). Indoor-only lights on a covered porch can work, but exposed to rain they will not last.
